Sanghamittarama was opened in 2007 as a supportive place for Buddhist women, whether lay or sangha, to live and practise the Dhamma on the path to Awakening. It is the first residence for ordained Buddhist women in the Theravada tradition in Victoria.
Our small centre was founded by the Buddhist Society of Victoria and Ayya Sucinta, a senior Bhikkhuni from Germany. Presently residing at Sanghamittārāma are Venerable Atapi Bhikkhuni and Venerable Dhammananda Bhikkhuni. We would warmly welcome other women practitioners interested in the monastic life to join the community.
Venerable Dhammanandā Bhikkhuni trained in Buddhist studies and meditation in Burma & Sri Lanka for several years. She was ordained in Vietnam in 1994, first in a Mahayana monastery, but has a keen interest in Theravada Buddhism which finally brought her to the Theravada tradiion. Ayya received her higher ordination in Anuradhapura, the ancient city of Sri Lanka in 2004. She was invited to reside and teach at Sanghamittarama in 2010. |
