Sanghamitta means "friend of the Sangha". Ārāma means delight and also park or monastery.

At Sanghamittārāma, we cultivate six ārāmas to help us overcome mental defilements:

  • Dhamma
  • Bhāvanā
  • Letting Go
  • Solitude
  • Contentment
  • Simplicity

These ārāmas are listed in the Anguttara Nikaya VI, 78. For further explanation, click here.

Sanghamitta was the daughter of the Indian King Asoka and the sister of Mahinda Thera.

As an arahat bhikkhuni she came to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century B.C.E. with a sapling of the Bodhgaya Bodhi tree under which the Buddha himself became enlightened.

Arahat Sanghamitta is still remembered with gratitude and celebrated in Sri Lanka on full moon days in December.

Queen Anula and a great number of her women followers were ordained and trained as bhikkhunis in Sri Lanka by Venerable Sanghamitta.
Several centuries later, bhikkhunis from Sri Lanka transmitted their lineage to China.

In time, it was transmitted to Korea and other countries where it has survived until today.

Thus in a way, all bhikkhunis are Sanghamitta's descendants.

Her name can be an inspiration for everyone, ordained or not. All supporters and visitors, male and female, are sanghamittas.
